BMCA is proud to anounce the upcoming Cheng Ran’s solo exhibition: Diary of a Madman – Trilogy. Co-curated by Guo Xiaohui and Silia Ka Tung, the exhibition will be opened on January 18th at The Center for Contemporary Art(CCA) in Tel Aviv, Israel.

This will be Cheng Ran’s first solo exhibition in Israel as well as the first full presentation of the work Diary of a Madman. The exhibition will provide a unique opportunity for the local audience to understand the diversity of Cheng Ran’s works.  Cheng Ran will hold a talk at 7pm local time.

The title Diary of a Madman is a reference to the short story Diary of a Madman by Chinese writer Lu Xun(1881-1936). In adeparture from Lu Xun’s story, Cheng is less interested in an explicit political message. By using complex cinematography expressed through hisidiosyncratic ideas on memories, living space and language, his story conveys amysteriously poetic sensation. Diary of a Madman is an ongoing project which began in 2016. It currently consists of three parts, each filmed in a different location, that have gradually come together to form the artist’s own “urban cantos.” The first part, Diary of a Madman – New York, was completed during a three month residency in New York in 2016. In Hong Kong, the artist filmed and completed Diary of a Madman – Mongrel and Black Kite in 2017.  Work on the third and final part: Diary of a Madman-Jerusalem: Chinese Patient began with a residency in Jerusalem in 2016 and was completed in late 2017.  The upcoming exhibition transforms the work into a visual trilogy of a phantasmic journey across three vastly different cultural spheres.

[Madman’s Diary – New York] was completed in New York in 2016 and then exhibited at New Art Museum in New York. Madman’s Diary – New York conveys a sense of loss between the streets of Manhattan and the projection of huge cities, or remains in a mental confusion like a mad man.

[Diary of a Madman – Mongrel and Black Kite] In the Hong Kong segment, the artist turned his focus to a Hong Kong without the shiny façade and myriad shopping complexes through the eyes of ‘Ma Ying’ (the Asian black kite, a common bird in the skies over Hong Kong) and ‘Tang Gou’ (a stray dog), two symbols of the city, poetically conveying the destinies of the city’s residents and their subtle, inextricable links to the true environment of this city.

【Diary of a Madman – Jerusalem: Chinese Patient】 A large, three-channel video work that Cheng Ran created during his residency with OUTSET foundation, Israel in 2016. The work tells a story centred on the “self” in Chinese and Hebrew. As the story unfolds, we will confront the artist playing a patient suffering from strange diseases, using his own body to experience the streets of Jerusalem, contemplating political conflicts and his own sense of confusion in the city.

The work also includes 1200 photos that Cheng Ran took during his stay in Israel, which will be showcased as an important part of the exhibition.

BMCA堯山當代藝術基金會很榮幸地宣布，由郭小暉與董葭共同策劃的程然個展“狂人日記：三部曲”將於1月18日在以色列特拉維夫的當代藝術中心（CCA）開幕。程然也將在晚七點開幕式期間做藝術家講座。

此次展覽為程然在以色列的首次個展，也是首次全面呈現 “狂人日記：三部曲”系列作品。可以說，這是一個試圖運用“心理地理學”這個語法，去揭示他者（異鄉人）、語言與言說、時間與地方這些問題的一個新的實驗。展覽將為觀眾提供一次獨特的機會了解程然個人創作的多樣性。

自從他新的一部史詩般的長達9小時的“奇蹟尋踪”（2016年）的視頻作品以來，程然把他的關注點放在了關於文化地理、他者、時間與城市環境之間的關係，以及語言意義的探討上。受到互聯網和廣告，政治事件和文學神話等各種來源的啟發，程然發展出一種既能引導內部世界，又能引導外部“他者”的詩歌語言。
作品的標題參考自魯迅先生於1918年寫的日記體文章《狂人日記》。該文以第一人稱講述了一個精神不健全的人，深信周圍的人都變成了吃人的人並策劃著迫害他的故事。同樣，在程然的這件作品中，第一人稱敘事，深刻的失落感以及近似瘋狂的異化感貫穿了整個過程。

【狂人日記 – 紐約】完成於2016年並在紐約新美術館展出，是程然在紐約三個月的藝術家駐地期間之作。作品傳遞出一種停留在曼哈頓大街小巷和巨大城市投影之間的迷失感，或是殘留在一種猶如瘋人般腦海中的令人難解的迷惑感。

【狂人日記- 唐狗與麻鷹】（2017年在香港油街藝術空間展出）以“麻鷹”（亞洲黑鳶，頻繁出現在香港上空）和“唐狗”（在香港被遺棄的土狗）這兩個極具城市符號的動物的視角來敘述他們的城市見聞，詩意地表達出城市居者的命運與他們所在這個真實的城市環境之間的微妙關係。

【狂人日記 – 耶路撒冷: 中國病人】為程然在2016年以色列OUTSET基金會藝術駐留期間創作的大型三頻道錄像，以漢語和希伯來語講述了一個以“自我”為核心主題的故事。隨著故事的展開，我們將直面藝術家扮演得一個罹患怪疾的病人，用自己的身體去體驗耶路撒冷的街道，思考城市的政治衝突和自我的困惑。

【狂人日記 – 耶路撒冷：中國病人】也包含了程然在以色列駐留期間拍攝的逾1200幅圖片，屆時也將作為重點展出。

 

藝術家

策展人

郭小暉 是一位目前居住在英國倫敦的獨立策展人，在藝術領域擁有十多年的工作經驗。 2014年，她獲得了倫敦大學Goldsmiths學院的藝術與政治與文化研究雙碩士學位。 2015年至今為三聯生活周刊海外特約撰稿人。目前任連州攝影博物館國際客座策展人。
她的策展方向主要以藝術與政治的關係為主要焦點，並彙集來自中國和西方的藝術家，策劃和實現具有創新意義的展覽。她於2016年創建了XH Projects，並在中國，英國，以色列和柏林策劃過眾多展覽。她近期策劃展覽及藝術項目包括：記憶成為早晨(成都當代美術館, 2016)；踪跡:勒梅特夫婦國際影像收藏展(北京民生現代美術館，2016)；遊戲編碼—Silia & Mali 雙人展(候鳥空間,柏林,2016)；衝突之地:藝術家駐留項目(中國/以色列，2016-2017) 程然個展(CCA，以色列，2018)等。

董葭 是一位藝術家，策展人，目前工作和生活在倫敦。
1997-2000就讀於倫敦的切爾西藝術學院繪畫專業並獲得學士學位；2000-2002年就讀於倫敦斯萊德美術學院繪畫專業並獲得碩士學位。曾受邀在英國及世界多處參加過展覽。舉辦過的個展與重要聯展包括：倫敦皇家藝術學院、阿姆斯特丹的阿米斯提展覽館、巴黎的卡斯滕·格雷夫畫廊、特拉維夫的魯賓博物館、上海當代藝術館和倫敦的捨伍德藝術空間。
作為一個獨立的策展人，董葭曾策劃過的展覽包括“You Blow Me Away”，倫敦Doors Showcase（2012年）; “Shape Of Things ”，特拉維夫Ferrate 畫廊（2011年）；“Repetition & Sequence ” ，倫敦Jerwood空間和橋藝術博覽會上（ 2007年）；“Sequence & Repetition”，倫敦布魯內爾大學的Beldam畫廊（ 2006年）以及“五個女抽像畫家”，倫敦Broadwick街的Hands沙龍( 2004年)。

展覽機構
特拉維夫 CCA 當代藝術中心

CCA當代藝術中心位於特拉維夫市中心，是以色列最主要的當代藝術機構之一。作為一家非營利性藝術機構，CCA每年可以舉辦4-6個大型展覽。展覽通常側重於傑出的當地及國際藝術家的基於時間或特定地點的藝術實踐。除了展覽之外，CCA還組織各種公共藝術活動，包括藝術討論，放映，藝術家講座和表演等，挑戰感知的觀念，激發辯論、實驗和參與。

堯山當代藝術基金會 BMCA
