The 20th anniversary of Frieze London, coupled with the 11th edition of Frieze Masters, once again established London’s Regent’s Park as the epicenter of the contemporary and historical art worlds. Running from 11–15 October 2023, these two art fairs brought together a staggering array of over 160 leading galleries from 46 countries. This year, Frieze celebrated not only its landmark anniversary but also its most international edition yet, offering a broad spectrum of solo, group, and thematic presentations from some of the world’s top artists and galleries.
Eva Langret, Director of Frieze London, emphasized the significance of this anniversary edition by highlighting its expansive global reach and the spirit of collaboration it ignited across London. With artists, galleries, and institutions from six continents, this year’s Frieze brought forward a melting pot of creative dialogue and innovation.

A Stellar Lineup of Global Galleries
Among the standout galleries were Blindspot Gallery, which showcased works from Turner Prize nominee Sin Wai Kin. Pilar Corrias presented a stunning solo exhibition by Sophie Von Hellerman, drawing inspiration from the iconic Dreamland theme park to challenge perceptions of femininity. Stephen Friedman Gallery’s solo booth featured powerful sculptures from Leilah Babirye, which touched on themes of community among queer Ugandans.
Marguerite Humeau’s solo installation at Clearing was also a standout, continuing her bold land art project, Orisons (2023). Hauser & Wirth drew attention with their solo presentation of Barbara Chase-Riboud, featuring bronze sculptures from her Standing Black Woman of Venice series.

This year’s edition focused on museum-quality works and provided a unique opportunity to discover historical connections across millennia, making it a must-visit for art enthusiasts and collectors alike.

Focus on Emerging Galleries
This year’s Focus section, which shines a light on galleries established in the last 12 years, featured a roster of exciting new talent, aided by bursaries from new partner Stone Island. Highlights included Copperfield’s thought-provoking display by Larry Achiampong, examining racial bias in video game design, and a shared booth by Heidi and Hot Wheels, showcasing Jordan Strafer’s film on power, abuse, and corruption, utilizing real courtroom transcripts.
Nicoletti’s presentation of Josèfa Ntjam’s work was another highlight, featuring photomontages that blend fact with fiction, exploring narratives of the Middle Passage. The tension between fragility and form was emphasized in PM8/Francisco Salas’s delicate glass sculptures by Marija Olšauskaitė, suspended in space to create a visceral sense of fragility.

Artist-to-Artist: A New Platform for Emerging Talents
One of the most intriguing elements of the 2023 edition was the Artist-to-Artist initiative, celebrating Frieze London’s 20th anniversary. This platform allowed eight internationally acclaimed artists to propose solo exhibitions of emerging artists, ensuring that fresh talent was given a prominent spotlight. Highlights included a curation by Tracey Emin of Vanessa Raw’s evocative paintings of the feminine body, and Olafur Eliasson’s nomination of Fabian Knecht, whose installation touched on the tragedy of war through camouflage clothing fragments.
The Artist-to-Artist section further underscored Frieze’s commitment to fostering meaningful connections between established and emerging talent in the art world, ensuring that the fair remains a driving force of artistic discovery and collaboration.

Frieze London 2023 reaffirmed its position as a key pillar of the global art scene, celebrating two decades of innovation, collaboration, and cultural exchange. With a dazzling array of established and emerging talent, coupled with rich historical insights from Frieze Masters, this edition was both a celebration of the fair’s history and a bold look toward its future. As Eva Langret and Nathan Clements-Gillespie noted, the fair’s emphasis on collaboration and inclusivity resonated throughout the galleries, the city of London, and the broader art world, making it an unmissable event in the 2023 art calendar.
