This autumn, Christie’s presents “Thierry Noir: Techno,” an immersive installation by the iconic Berlin artist Thierry Noir that is infused with music-inspired creativity. This remarkable exhibition is a collaborative effort with London’s legendary nightclub, Fabric.

Thierry Noir began his artistic journey when he relocated from France to Berlin in the 1980s. He made history as the first artist to paint extensive murals on the Berlin Wall, where he developed his unique visual language. Since then, Noir has become an integral part of Berlin’s vibrant underground scene. Music, the lifeblood of the German capital, permeates every aspect of Noir’s life and creative output. He sees art as a form of performance and frequently draws parallels with the dynamic performances of musicians or DJs. The colours, lines, energy, and rhythm in his artworks echo the mesmerizing sounds of techno music.

In this exhibition, Thierry Noir unveils a collection of new paintings that he meticulously crafted exclusively for Christie’s over the past year. Visitors are invited to embark on a journey through Noir’s vibrant and colorful visual universe while immersing themselves in Berlin’s pulsating techno scene.

The public exhibition is open to all and offers free entry from September 28th to October 2nd, 2023, at 8 King Street in London. Don’t miss this unique opportunity to experience the convergence of art, music, and culture through Thierry Noir’s distinctive lens.

Thierry Noir

Thierry Noir was born in 1958 in Lyon, France, and moved to Berlin in January 1982. In April 1984, Noir began painting the Berlin Wall, earning the distinction of being the first artist to do so. Noir’s objective was to perform a truly revolutionary act: to paint the Berlin Wall, to transform it, to make it appear ridiculous, and thereby to contribute to its eventual destruction—a goal realized with the wall’s fall in 1989. Covering the more than 3-meter-high Berlin Wall with bright, vivid colors, Noir aimed not to beautify it but to demystify it. His iconic, bright, and seemingly innocent works on this lethal barrier stood as a singular act of defiance and a lone voice for freedom.

Since the 1980s, Noir’s audacious actions and unique visual language have gained him worldwide acclaim, leaving an indelible mark on popular culture. His art has been featured in films such as Wim Wenders’ “Wings of Desire,” and his work adorned the cover of U2’s album “Achtung Baby.”
